April 22nd, 2009Present Time!

Remember this post?  Yeah, so I got the idea for the first recipient’s gift pretty much right away – and then life happened.  Finally, 3 months and 1 day later, it’s done!

(Apologies in advance for dark and crappy photography; there is some detail that doesn’t quite come through in the pictures)

I present to you, Andrei, your Idea Pillow!

You are definitely an “idea” guy, I think.  I hope you like it!  It’s waiting for you, for next time we see each other. :-)

I wish I had made the pillow a bit bigger, and the applique a bit smaller in relation to the pillow size.  My favorite part, though, is the zippered back:

which was incredibly tricky and clever, and brought to you by this post from house on hill road.

November 18th, 2008Right now…

…eating a pomegranate.  This brings back memories – I was so in love with this unusual fruit in high school :-)

November 13th, 2008Whoops

I thought I had it down, bringing my laptop on the train to the city last night so I could work and blog while waiting for my dance clinic appointment.  There was a flaw in my plan, though – I got so wrapped up in the work part that I forgot to blog.  I came home after the appointment, and didn’t turn on my computer again.  So much for NaBloPoMo!  I will try to keep posting frequently all the same….

As for the clinic, it was pretty cool.  ODC School has a small office for doctor-volunteers who show up for a couple of hours each day during the week (there are several doctors; each takes one day).  You sign up for a 15-minute time slot, and just go in.  It turns out my upper quads and hip flexors are strained (surprise!), and I need to use a combination of stretching and strengthening to ease the pain.  I mostly knew that it was a muscle strength problem already; I just needed to find out which muscles were weak and which were working too hard.

Also, today is my Jon’s birthday!!  Happy birthday love, don’t let going beta get you down today :-)   You’ll get your prezzies after work….

November 10th, 2008The good kind of pain.

I thought it would be fun to take ballet on both Saturday and Sunday last weekend.  Boy, are my legs reminding me about that today – my calves and quads have been burning all day, especially after sitting at a computer desk for a few hours straight.  It is all lactic acid buildup, though – no injuries (except for the hip thing, which doesn’t bother me under normal activity).  It feels…GREAT!

On top of that, Eileen wants me to go take a power sculpting class at the EA gym tomorrow (before heading to dance at 6:30).  I am tempted to try.

November 8th, 2008Just A Quickie

…before I head out for the evening’s fun.  I just got back from ballet class (first one in a week after feeling a little crappy), and had the last bit of veggie lasagna left over from the election night party.  Watched about 10 minutes of Platoon, now I’m gonna hit the shower so I smell nice :-)

I stopped my dance teacher after class and asked about the pain I’ve been having in my right hip.  After she told me that she didn’t really have time to go into it, she glanced at my hips and told me they were completely uneven – I hadn’t ever noticed that.  She also suggested I try taking her Feldenkrais class (I will, provided I can get out of bed at 8:00 next weekend), and apparently there is a FREE DANCE MEDICINE CLINIC in the building – I’ll be checking that out on Wednesday, and maybe they can give me some stretches/exercises.  If it turns out to be something more complicated, I’ll have to find a sports medicine doctor that understands dancers down on the Peninsula.

  • Prop 8.  Just….wow.  I have no words.

Okay, I guess that’s it.  For now.  You’re on notice, California.

November 4th, 2008Yo Voté

It felt so good to go vote this morning – probably mostly because after more than a year of bickering, today is the (last) day for everyone to make their decision.  It was also cool because, for once, there was an actual wait at our polling place, so that means other people are excited too!  Hopefully they are excited for the right people :-)

I love voting in general.  Last time, when we voted Jackie Speier for Congress in a special election (the previous congressman, Tom Lantos, died mid-term), there were more people staffing the polling station than actually voting.  It was a little depressing, but I took my “I Voted” sticker and stuck it proudly on my wallet, where it remains today.

One note:  this year’s “I Voted” stickers, at least for San Mateo County, are not nearly as cool.  I am undecided on whether to save it – I guess that’s one more decision I have to make today :-)

November 3rd, 200830…

…is my age.  It feels pretty good so far – as in, I don’t feel any older than I did yesterday*, and I have a couple of cool new things thanks to my awesome parents and boyfriend!  My folks got me a dressform, so I can go play seamstress now instead of trying to pin and fit clothes on myself!  Jon got me a french press, so I can go play fancy coffee-drinker instead of using the cheap hand-me-down drip coffee machine!  We went down to San Jose tonight for another friend’s birthday dinner at Left Bank.  Yum!

Everything is coming up Milhouse :-)

*except for when Jon looks at me and says “How old are you?” and I say “30″ and then he says “And how old am I?” and I say “28″ and try not to punch him in the face.

November 2nd, 2008Wanting

My mom asked me a few weeks back what I wanted for my birthday – and I actually struggled to find something to tell her.  It’s weird – I spent all year trying very hard to not want things, and it worked!  I have tamed the gadget lust, the yarnphilia, and even concert-going.  All that is left are big-ticket items, which I am keeping on the back-burner until I can show a real need for them.

The things left on my list include a bicycle, a new digital camera (USB connector plz!), and a new computer (toying with the idea of getting a Mac).  All of these would be useful, but I just ask myself whether my situation would be improved in some way by having them – and the answer keeps coming up “no.”  My money is best served sitting in a savings account for now.

Poor American economy, where the people who would be the responsible shoppers and not misuse credit are actually being responsible and only buying things they can truly use :-)

May 1st, 2008Memorific

I don’t usually participate in blog memes, mostly because they take too much time. This one from The Spun Monkey looked easy, though, and hey – it makes me look (a little) cultured!

These are the top 106 books most often marked as “unread” by LibraryThing’s users. As in, they sit on the shelf to make you look smart or well-rounded. Bold the ones you’ve read, italicize the ones you own but have not read.
